This document presents information about a research that was conducted on Japanese song lyrics. Its purpose was to narrow down the exhaustive list of Japanese Kanji characters to include only those that are used the most. There is no really an exact number of Kanji characters; however, it is estimated to be over 10,000 characters from which only 2,136 are taught in schools and only 2,211 need to be learned to pass the JLPT. With so many Kanji characters to learn, it is essential to know at least which of them are actively being used on a common basis.For the purpose of this analysis, 50,000 song lyrics were used as the sample data. The song lyrics were extracted from available songs online.This document is intended for anyone who is interested in learning Japanese language. I hope, however, this research can be considered relevant by both, experienced and non-experienced Japanese language learners.The list of the most used Japanese Kanji characters in song lyrics is provided along with the Kanji’s pronunciations, meanings, some examples and some sentences. The list is composed of 2,136 Kanji characters.Statistics:55% of the Kanji characters taught at school, are the same as the first 2,136 characters used in song lyrics.52% of the Kanji characters needed to pass the JLPT, are the same as the first 2,136 characters used in song lyrics.BONUS: The list of the most common Japanese words in song lyrics is provided along with the word’s pronunciation and meaning.
